It's a great pleasure to welcome everyone to ACM CoNEXT 2008 - the 4th International Conference on emerging Networking EXperiments and Technologies. The first three CoNEXT conferences were held in Toulouse, Lisbon and New York, and this year returned to its roots in Europe. This year's edition has been co-organized by IMDEA Networks and University of Carlos III, and held in Madrid: one of the world's leading cities in terms of cultural and artistic activity along with a lively nightlife. We hope that this conference facilitates a stimulating exchange of ideas among many of the members of our international research community.
The ACM CoNEXT'08 Conference received 166 papers of high quality, of which 29 were selected for publication after a thorough peer review process. The ACM CoNEXT Student Workshop received 66 poster submissions out of which 30 were accepted; ReArch'08 Re-Architecting the Internet Workshop received 50 papers submitted and 13 accepted; and ROADS'08 3rd International Workshop on Real Overlays & Distributed Systems received 20 paper submissions out of which 6 were accepted.
We want to highlight the commitment of the CoNEXT organizers Steering Committee, conference's supporters, to supporting and attracting young researchers to the conference, through the development of a top notch technical program, emphasis and support for student travel grants, student banquet and attention to every matter that might make this a particularly valuable experience to them.
ACM CoNEXT'08 was made possible only through the hard work of many people. Keith Ross and Leandros Tassiulas assembled an absolutely outstanding technical program committee that reviewed submitted papers and selected the final program. A huge debt of thanks is due to our program committee members and external reviewers for helping to assemble such a strong technical program. A very special thanks to the Local Arrangement Chairs, Maria Calderon and Carlos Jesus Bernardos, who devoted an enormous amount of time to make the overall organization of the Conference a great success. Also we would like to mention the excellent work of our Publications Chair Hassnaa Moustafa.
At the same time many people contributed to putting together the three collocated workshops. The CoNEXT Student Workshop chairs Benoit Donnet, Boon Thau Loo and Ryuji Wakikawa, did an excellent job, as also did the Student Travel Awards chairs Nick Race and Sanjay Rao. We thank the chairs and program committee for their work putting together a wonderful program. The ReArch'08-workshop chairs, Olivier Bonaventure, Marcelo Bagnulo and Joe Touch, and ROADS'08 chairs, Andy Bavier, Krishna Gummadi and Pablo Rodriguez along with the technical program committee members did prepare top notch focused programs complementary to the main conference. We also want to express our thanks to IMDEA Networks staff Rebeca De Miguel and Sophie Hamel, that were giving excellent support to all attendees and professional attention to organization matters.
Thanks due to ACM SIGCOMM which now has sponsored CoNEXT for the second year, and plans to continue in the future for their leadership and support putting together this conference. Christophe Diot and Mark Crovella have been ACM liaison, and have been very supportive to the conference organizers. CoNEXT and the community at large owe a debt of gratitude to the Steering Committee Arturo Azcorra, Kenjiro Cho, Serge Fdida, Roch Guèrin, Jim Kurose and Laurent Mathy that have played and active and gracious role in keeping the conference on track, and exacting at all times the best of all involved.
We are also specially grateful to Microsoft Research Cambridge, having shown an outstanding commitment with technological research by becoming silver supporter of ACM CoNEXT'08; many thanks also to our bronze supporters Thomson, Cisco, Nokia, CONTENT NoE, U. Carlos III and IMDEA Networks. Also worth mentioning our corporate patrons: IBM, Trilogy, Orange and OneLab. The generosity of our supporters and patrons, allowed us to make substantial number of student travel grants, fund the Student Banquet (Microsoft), and helped keep the costs of CoNEXT down.
Welcome again to ACM CoNEXT'08 and to Madrid! We hope you find the Conference and co-located workshops a stimulating and exciting experience.
