Each year, ACM SIGCOMM will present a "Rising Star" Award, recognizing a young researcher - an individual no older than 35 - who has made outstanding research contributions to the field of communication networks during this early part of his/her career. One criteria of particular interest is very strong research contributions made independently from the Ph.D. advisor.
Awardees are selected by an Award Committee, jointly appointed by the SIGCOMM Executive Committee and the CoNEXT Conference Steering Committee, who will be aware of the global nature of the networking field, as well as the different research cultures that can exist in different countries.
After a rigorous and competitive selection process, following an open call for nominations, the 2008 ACM SIGCOMM Rising Star Award has been awarded to: Konstantina (Dina) Papagiannaki (Intel-Research Pittsburgh, USA).
The award to Konstantina Papagiannaki is in recognition of outstanding research contributions, early in her career, on the role of measurements for the development of efficient algorithms in the design, planning, and management of wired and wireless IP networks.
The Award will be presented to Dina at ACM CoNEXT 2008 in Madrid, Spain, December 9-12, 2008, where she will deliver a Keynote Address.
Conference registration, travel, and lodging for the awardee will be paid by ACM SIGCOMM.
The nominee must be 35 years of age or younger as of December 31st of the year in which the award is made.
The Rising Star Award Committee solicits nominations for deserving candidates.
The nominator should solicit recommendations from colleagues in the field who are most familiar with the nominee's achievements.
Copies of published work should not be sent.
The nominator is responsible for ensuring that all nomination materials reach the Rising Star Award Committee Chair, by email, by the submission deadline.
Nominations that arrive after the deadline will be held over to the following year for consideration. Nominations that did not result in an award can be resubmitted or updated in subsequent years.
Self-nominations are not accepted.
