Conference location: SIGCOMM 2006 will be held at the Stazione Leopolda, piazza Guerrazzi, 56125 Pisa (Italy), from Monday, 11 September 2006, to Friday, 15 September 2006. The location will be open from 8:00 to the end of the day (21:00 on Monday, 19:00 on other days). Nearby places (with bus stops) are viale Bonaini, via Croce, via Cattaneo, and the Palazzo dei Congressi. (the two other points on the map, Arsenale and Sapienza, are the locations of the Banquet and Student dinner, respectively).
Reaching the Leopolda:
The Leopolda is on the west side of the town,
100m from the bridge called 'ponte della Vittoria', on the south bank of
the Arno river. It is within walking distance (5..15 min, max 1.5km) from all
hotels in the train station area, and those in the central part of the town.
Those in the Leaning Tower are 2-2.5km away.
If you don't feel like walking, buses #5 and #9 stop nearby,
or you can take any bus stopping at the train station, and from there take
viale Bonaini, going west (towards the river) to reach
the Leopolda in a 5-min walk.
If you are coming by car, there is a number of toll parking spots
in the nearby streets, at 1 Euro/hour.
On Monday evening (18:00-21:00) we will have the Welcome Reception. Feel free to bring to the event any person traveling with you.
Registering for the conference: at your arrival at the Leopolda, you should look for the registration desk near the entrance, preferably with a picture ID, to pick up your registration pack. If you are interested in using the network services (wired and wireless) at the Leopolda, you will be requested to read, fill and sign a form with the conditions of use of the network (mandated by Italian laws), and assigned a unique password to get access to the network.
In the registration pack (a soft red bag) you will find: your badge for the events you have registered for; tickets for the banquet (and student dinner, if applicable); the conference and workshop proceedings (1kg each); the Posters/Local info booklet; a bookmark, containing the program of the conference; a shirt; and gadgets/flyers from the supporters or the organization.
Reaching your hotel If you arrive in Pisa outside the conference times, your hotel will probably be your first destination. Otherwise, given the vicinity of the Leopolda to the Airport and Train Station, it might be worthwhile stopping there first, for a refreshment and to join the sessions, and then move to the hotel at a later time.
Arriving by Plane: The Pisa airport is at the south-west end of the town, surprisingly close (1.5km or 15min walk) to the Leopolda. In addition to cabs and a shared cab ("Taxi Collettivo", not door-to-door), you can take bus #1 (and possibly switch, at the train station, to buses #5 or #9 or some other serving your destination). On Sunday and Monday evening, from 20:30 to 0:30, we will have a dedicated Sigcomm shuttle, serving hotels within the city limits (so, excluding nearby villages like San Giuliano, Tirrenia etc.). At the arrival gate, look for people holding SIGCOMM signs, tell them your name and hotel, and, if it is one of the served ones, follow their indications.
Arriving by Train: Most buses stop at the train station (which is just 700m from the Leopolda), serving the various areas of the town, so public transportation is quite effective there. Cabs and the shared cab also stop there.
Arriving by Car:
The preferred highway exit for Pisa is Pisa Centro, which brings
you straight to the airport and from there you can cross the town
for your destination. You can drive along the river, but otherwise most
of the central streets are restricted traffic areas, with camera access control
at the (very visible) gates. Be careful not to enter there if you don't want a fine.
In case, check with your hotel for instructions.
Note that street parking (at least in the places marked by blue lines) is generally subject to a fee from 8:00 to 20:00.
