Coming through Tokyo

If you arrive at Narita airport to go around Tokyo before or after the conference, you have to travel between Narita/Tokyo and Tokyo/Kyoto.

Between Narita and Tokyo Metropolitan Area

There are JR express trains, Narita Express(NEX), between Narita and Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station. It is most convenient and fast (about 60 minutes). Fare is 3,140 JPY for standard, 4,430 JPY for first class(Green Car).

If you stay at a hotel in Tokyo, the Airport Limousine bus service will be another option. Fare depends on which hotel you will go to, but it will be around 3000 JPY one way.

Tokyo to/from Kyoto

Bullet train operated by Cnetral Japan Railway is one of the best way to travel between Tokyo and Kyoto. There are three type of trains - Nozomi/Hikari/Kodama. Use either Nozomi or Hikari. Nozomi provides shortest travel time but a bit expensive. Nozomi one way costs 13,720 ( = 7980 + 5740) JPY, including a reserved seat charge. I will take 140 min. If you choose a first class car (Green Car), it will cost a bit more (18160 JPY = 7980 + 10180).

Tips:

Altough it is possible to purchase a reserved ticket for bullet train online, the site is only available in Japanese. We suggest to purchase tickets at Narita, at least towards Kyoto, even you do not travel on the same day.

You can purchase a bit cheaper ticket if you travel on the same day from Narita to Kyoto (via Tokyo, for example). A reserved seat charge will be the same, but the base fee is cheaper.

If you stay in Tokyo on the arrival data from Kyoto, it would be best to stay in Metropolitan Tokyo Area, nearby two of bullet train stations: Tokyo or Shinagawa. Hotels nearby Shinagawa is typically cheaper than the hotels nearby Tokyo.

Credit cards can be used at many places in Japan, but according to some source and some of our staff's experience, sometimes, it is not possible to pay by foreign credit card even the place claims to accept the major cards. This is especially true for Taxi payment. Thus, we suggest to have some cash at hand. You can convert your currency to Japanese Yen at the airport easily, after you get out of customs.

Train station is basement floor of Narita Airport. There are some ticket counters on the floor of the exit from the customs, but they do not accept cards. There are full-service ticketing counters in the basement floor.
