Three trends are changing the relationship between distributed applications and the network. First, the number of places where workloads run is growing, from the far edge to the near edge, to the cloud, and even into space. Second, the number of applications spanning compute sites is growing, including video analytics, tele-operated robotics, and AR/VR. Finally, the networks between sites are increasingly programmable, offering APIs for influencing traffic and exposing network performance and behavior. This talk will provide an overview of these trends, a common programming pattern that has emerged from their confluence, and ways that cloud platforms like Azure can better support this programming pattern.
