Hotel information
We have secured two hotel room blocks for IMC attendees close to the IMC venue (the KIT Royal Tropical Institute). Information about the two hotels and instructions on how to make use of the block prices is listed below.
Note that Amsterdam has ample accommodation available in all budget classes, so in case you wish to book something else, we recommend that you use one of the popular booking sites. We provide information about a good budget option for students (especially those that want to share rooms) at the bottom of this page.
Equally, there is ample accommodation available through sites such as AirBNB, although we do caution that like many European cities, Amsterdam is cracking down on overuse of AirBNB properties so do consult your host to make sure your booking is guaranteed.
Note: the week of IMC is the same week as the autumn school holiday for primary and secondary education in The Netherlands and some neighbouring European countries, so we recommend that you book your accommodation on time, as there may be many last-minute bookings in this week.
IMC Hotel Blocks
Hotel Arena
The Hotel Arena is located 350m (4 minutes walking) west of the IMC venue. The hotel is located in a set of beautiful historical buildings from the year 1886 that originally housed an orphanage. The hotel borders on the Oosterpark, a large green space and it is possible to walk through the park to the IMC venue.
The hotel block in Hotel Arena has expired, but you can still check availability through the regular booking site for Hotel Arena.

Budget Option for Students
There is a recently opened (2018) hostel-style hotel in Amsterdam called the Hotel Meininger, that is about 15 minutes away from the IMC venue by public transport. It offers modern rooms with anywhere from 2 to 6 beds, and is ideal for room sharing. The hotel is located right next to Amsterdam Amstel train station with bus, metro and train connections.
While we have not negotiated any specific deal with this hotel, prices are generally very reasonable, especially when sharing rooms.
Below are useful links for those that wish to explore this accommodation:
Travelling to the venue from the Meininger
You can easily get to the venue from the Meininger in about 15 minutes. All you need is a valid public transport chip card (if you do not have the free IMC card, you can purchase tickets from the “GVB” machines in the station). The easiest way to do this, is to go to Amsterdam Amstel railway station (right next to the hotel). For your convenience, step-by-step instructions are provided below:
- Enter Amsterdam Amstel station.
- Proceed through the station hall towards the platforms, and keep left.
- Enter the ticketed area through the “GVB” turnstiles (blue sign above the turnstiles); be careful there are separate turnstiles for the national railways and for local public transport, and you need to enter through the correct turnstiles.
- Head up to the first platform (platform 1) you encounter (stairs on left and right).
- Take any metro from the inner platform, they all have direction “Centraal Station”. The inner platform is on the left in the direction of travel. Note: the outer platform is only serviced by the national railways, do not board a train, as this will not take you to the right station, and your ticket is likely not valid on a train.
- Get off at “Weesperplein”, the second metro stop after Amsterdam Amstel.
- Exit the Weesperplein station through the exit marked “Mauritskade (HvA)”.
- At street level, continue straight on across the bridge and across the intersection and turn left onto Mauritskade (map shown below).
- Follow Mauritskade until you reach the venue on your right.
